Thracian tomb adventures near Mezek

Good evening all!

As you can see from the cover photo my barefoot adventures continued. I was lucky to have the opportunity to go with Misha-my supervisor and Maria- the other ESC volunteer to a trip near the rhodope village Mezek where we were in search of a secret non-touristic hidden thracian tomb! The tomb was supposed to be somewhere close to the peak Sheynovec. We were walking for a long time before we realized that we were in the wrong path.

We saw a snake (maybe “slow worm” according to Google Lens- it’s called “slepok” in bulgarian) and in the distance we saw a wild boar mother with her tiny babies. I told that was the best thing I was gonna experience. But wait for the tomb!

We were walking and navigating thanks to the red dot marks on the trees made by recycled beer cans that Ognyan (our host) had done for the Mezek run marathon. We didn’t know almost anything about the tomb so I didn’t had any expectations but my mind was blown when we reached it. I felt like Indiana Jones seeing this ancient tomb being reserved so well. I felt like I’m close to a time machine. My supervisor Misha made an incredible video of it which I will share with you here. I will never forget this moment in my life! Just the day before we went to a thracian tomb which is much bigger but touristic and  the feeling was not at all the same. The magic which I experienced here I wouldn’t be able to experience in a place where there are people behind me photographing and waiting for their turn. Back in the days the entrance was blocked with large stone plates. It was studied in the 1930s. 345cm is the height of the tomb.

After I got in I touched the ground, closed my eyes and thought of all the fears and feelings that I want to leave here, in the ground of Mother Earth. The spheric dome was creating a special kind of energy that I can not quite explain. After I got out I climbed to the top of it and found a really interesting root of a tree which I decided to take home and maybe someday use it as a door handle for my future dream house.  I left the place feeling energized with big smile on my face.  Going to the road back I gathered some herbs. I would love to come back to this magical place one day.

Next week I will share with you an interview that I made with a truly inspiring woman- Mar, the creator of the blog “Zemya nazaem”.

Thank you for reading!

See you next week,

Polin
