Rahovitza is a hamlet of the rhodopean village Kosovo, situated 60 km. south of the town of Plovdiv – the second big city of Bulgaria. The place was first settled some 150 years ago and hosted one big family and 200 sheep. During the communism epoch in Bulgaria, the cattle was collectivized and the founders and owners of the small farm decided to leave the mountain, as they could not sustain themselves from agriculture. They sold the property to local peasants who lived there until the 1980’s.
For 20 years the place was abandoned and was slowly turning into a ruin. We acquired it the year 2000 and started to renovate the houses.
We use locally available materials, traditional building techniques and work with local craftsmen. We have hosted regularlly summer building workcamps and organize trainings on natural building. Now that the main buildings are renovated, we have decided to start the emplementation of a permaculture orchard garden.
Rahovitza is wild and beautifull place, where the visitor can appreciate the authentic rhodopean landscapes and the traditional bulgarian kitchen and culture.
