Week 2: My introduction to permaculture

Hello all!

This week I started reading the book “Permaculture design” A step-by-step guide by Aranya. So today I gonna write what I have learned from the first chapter which was on the topic of observation skills and more specifically – Patterns.

I read my supervisor’s children book “Friends in the garden” as well. Mihaela Tzarchinska and the illustrator Angelina Kadiiska explain the beneficial combinations between plants which are called “guilds”. Here is a beautiful illustration from the book:

So let’s go back to the topic of “Patterns”.

According to Aranya observation skills are highly important for people in order to survive and create good designs. While observing nature we can see that different patterns appear- spirals, webs, waves and etc. Patterns can be seen both in time and space.

Patterns in space

I like the way Aranya explained patterns in space “Patterns occur at the edge between two different media or systems.”. He gave as an example of edge with the waves and more specifically the place where air mixes with the water. Or the edge between the earth and the atmosphere.

I love the way Aranya explained how our bodies work- he said that the cells in our bodies are in a perfectly symbiotic co-operative relationship the same way that nature interacts.

Patterns in time

Good examples of patterns in time are the 4 seasons or the day/night cycles. Aranya stated that by knowing more about the seasons we can predict the most productive time to plant seeds for example.

In the next blog I will write about The systems theory. See you soon!

Greetings,

Polin
