Week 72: Interview with a candidate for LAND center; the uses of zeolite in your garden. Vlad and Nikolina about design in permaculture.

Marija:

Eversince I arrived in Bulgaria on my on-arrival training that took place in a natural estate called Blagodat, I had the idea and inspiration to interview the owner. I believe that this kinds of people and stories should be shared more often in order to inspire other people and to show that there is a different side to what is happening in the world today except for what is shown in the media. I know that I am not the only one in this sharing but this is my contribution to changing the narative about our reality. It is a truly motivating story told by a men with an experience with creating this kind of place and it is not sprinkled with romantic ideas that everything goes smooth and easy, but that everything is possible once you put your mind to it. I will leave the interview to speak for itself.

Andrii:

The zeolite has many useful physicochemical components. It comes from volcanic materials and can be used in the industrial, environmental and agricultural sphere. Some of the amazing benefits for using zeolite for your gardening are:

  • It will help with moisture in the soil. It is well known for its water retention capacity and decreasing drainage capacity of the soil. It can transfer water throughout the soil.
  • It extracts hard metals from the soil. It is very useful for contaminated soil.
  • It can be used with other fertilizers. It has the capacity to retain nutrients from the soil and release them to the plants when they are needed. It is ecological method for improving the soil quality and raising the crop production.
  • It is not consumed by the microbes, and it stays in the soil for a long time. It doesn’t have to be used often and it has long term effects.

Zeolite comes in either granular or powder form. It is very important to put in the soil the right dosage. It is recommended to put half a kilogram on one square metal of soil, or if you use pots it should be around five percent of the material that you put in the pot. Furthermore, it can be also used in the composting piles as it helps the decomposition, and it decreases the smell. For the compost, it should not be more than one kilogram.

You can find a lot of information online and companies that offer organic natural zeolite, especially because it is time and money saving for the big agricultural producers.

We made an experiment in the backyard of our office building.

Permaculture and design.  By observing and emulating how nature combines its components, we can create gardens, buildings, communities, projects, and more that function almost like natural systems.  They require less effort and energy to maintain, while their productivity is greater.  Because the relationship between the components of such systems is modeled to interact mutually beneficial.

A simple example: imagine a simple piece of land on which we want to build four objects.  In permaculture design, the components of one system should not be isolated from each other, but interconnected.
